Irish Food in Boston

Happy July everybody! Its been a whirlwind few months here in sunny Boston with Sásta popping up all over the place. From farmers markets to specialty food stores, we are having a brilliant summer bringing Irish food to the masses.

One of the things I have loved most about working at farmers markets here is listening to people’s stories about their Irish travels and their heritage.It never ceases to amaze me the influence our little green rock in the sea seems to hold over people. I suppose it makes sense though….living in Boston, its hard to avoid the Irish influence in this city. So many people I have spoken to long for a taste of Ireland, things they miss from home. Irish Stew – A Proper St Patricks Meal!

I knew St. Patricks day was a big deal in the US – I am just not sure I knew it was this big! When I say everything turns green,  I mean everything! The rivers, the coffee, the beer – yep, all a lurid color known as Kelly Green! Its so big here in Boston that the famed mayor of the 1940’s Mr J.M. Curley ferreted out a historic event that co-incided with St Patricks Day so that he could declare it a public holiday, namely Evacuation Day. Continue reading

Exploring Eataly Boston

Eataly is a chain of Italian inspired stores which started in NY and and has most recently spread to Boston. I say stores, to be honest, Eataly is more like a shrine to food through an Italian eye. I do not know why but I have long held a desire to spend autumn in New England. The colors, flavors and lifestyle portrayed in movies may have had something to do with it! New England Corn Chowder

When you think of a country, chances are you have some preconception about the food there, regardless as to whether its accurate. Its pretty common to hear people declare their love for corned beef and cabbage when thinking of Irish food when, really it is an immigrant interpretation of bacon and cabbage. France has its snails, frogs legs and baguettes. England has its fish and chips, bangers and mash and Spain – tapas and paella. Sometimes though, these preconceptions are wholly on point and that is a joyous thing. Continue reading
