On Ireland and Irish Food….

I am sure most of you know this but it’s not been long since my husband and I moved to Boston, Massachusetts. It’s a beautiful city in an equally stunning region, surrounded by lush farmland, coastal havens of shellfish and deep blue Atlantic fishing grounds. It is probably the most Irish city in the world outside of Ireland. Yesterday I was driving through Cambridge (home of Harvard University) and cycling in the opposite direction was a guy wearing a Kerry jersey. I am no longer surprised when I hear Irish accents on public transport and half of the kids working in pubs and restaurants over the summer are here on J1 visa’s from Ireland. Continue reading

Christmas Dinner Traditions

Christmas is by far my favorite time of year. Everyone is smiling, cities are alight with the glow of decorations and time with family and friends is the most important thing. Not to mention the abundance of food flowing at every table. Traditions and familiarity are part of the story. There are few traditions in my family as set in stone is the food that graces or dining room. I thought it might be nice to inspire you with some of our traditions. Continue reading

Grilled Peach, Goats Cheese and Blueberry Salad

This salad is one of my favourite lunches at the moment. It is full of the best of New England produce and is like summer in a bowl. It makes a great weekend lunch to eat outside or as a side dish at a BBQ. The important thing here is to use ripe juicy peaches and to grill them slowly, grilling them too quickly will make them stick to the grill. Grilling them brings out even more sweetness and the peppery rocket balances this really well. Continue reading

Sunshine Food

Happy Memorial Day folks, I really had no idea how big a holiday it is in the USA and its been interesting to learn about it. It also seems to mark the start of Summer in New England with people taking trips out to the Cape and the islands to kick off the season. Its been fun to see things coming to life. Continue reading

Fluffy Lemon Sour Cream Pancakes

At this stage, we all know that I have a serious affinity for breakfast foods! I love brunch probably more than most meals. Savory or sweet, this is my kind of meal. Lets face it, pancakes make most people happy!

For the last few years, we have made a little tradition in our house of going to New York for Thanksgiving. Its such a fantastic way of getting into the festive spirit and do some Christmas shopping. I love watching the parade and wandering around, looking at Christmas windows. Continue reading

Exploring Boston

They say moving house, getting married and changing jobs are among the top five most stressful life events an adult can go through. Well we certainly don’t do things by halves in our house. In less than nine months, we have gotten married, left jobs in Ireland and the UK, I returned to study and now we have moved across the Atlantic to Boston, Massachusetts. Sometimes I ask myself are we insane! Continue reading

Organic Gardening Classes

One of the best things for me here at Ballymaloe is the breadth of knowledge that is passed along to us from each and every member of the team. Last Wednesday morning at 7:30am, a motley crew of us gathered to have a whirlwind tour of the herbs, vegetables and salads that are grown in the organic gardens here and to obtain advice from the wonderful Eileen about planting ourselves. Continue reading
