It is Mothers Day in the US on Sunday. While I am not one for Hallmark holidays, I do think its nice to remember every now and then how much our mothers do for us and show them that it doesn’t go un-noticed. As one might expect, celebrations in our house growing up always involved food! I remember mums birthday or mothers days toasted with brunches and bubbles! Meyer lemon is not something I have ever tried before. Sweeter than a lemon with an almost tangerine flavor to them, they are an unusual taste that seems to work best for dessert dishes. I know it sounds strange but similar to scent, food can bring me back to happy moments in my past. I smell tarte tatin and I am immediately transported to a small village restaurant in the coastal town of Port Grimaud (near St Tropez) where we shared the dessert as a birthday treat for my mother many years ago.
Courgettes or zucchini, whatever you call these pretty green squash, they are such versatile vegetables and one of my favorite ingredients. Roasted, grilled, fried….I love them any way I can get them. Serendipitously, I had some leftover shredded courgette after dinner a few nights ago and I immediately thought about fritters. When I go to the farmers market, I can’t resist stocking up on the best of seasonal ingredients. Nothing wrong with this except for the fact that sometimes, my eyes are bigger than my belly. Its common for us to have far too much food for two people as a result. This is where my “using up” skills come in to play! I fill the freezer with what I can and then make jams, chutneys and sauces with whatever remains. I like bananas, I really do. They are the perfect snack or breakfast food. In a previous job, my boss ate a banana every day at 10am, which we collectively named nana time! However, I have a major problem with them. I don’t like them enough to eat every day and so I often end up with a lot of brown bananas, begging to be used up.
